I KEEP TRYING to find a chance to tell Meryl that I’m getting her truck fixed. But every time I see her, she finds some reason to be going the other direction. It’s exactly like when I’m canvassing, and people have no qualms about crossing the street to avoid me.

So the day the truck is ready, I just drive it—using the new set of keys the mechanic made—over to Forest House, figuring I’ll come up with some way to corner her and explain.

It’s my night to make dinner. As usual, the prospect of food unites the house like nothing else. Everyone except Meryl, who’s no doubt walking home from work, has converged in the kitchen to watch me cook.

“Isn’t that Meryl’s truck outside? I thought it was dead,” Charles says, stealing a handful of chopped red peppers and tossing them into his mouth.

“It’s fixed now,” I say.

“Where’d she get the cash? She told me she was strapped.” Nick grabs a slice of portobello.

“Would you guys quit it? There won’t be enough to stir-fry if you keep eating it all raw.”

When did she tell him?

“What the hell is my truck doing in the driveway? ” Meryl demands.

“Move it if you want. It’s fixed.” I scrape the vegetables from the cutting board into the wok. They sizzle.

“Excuse me? ”

“It’s fixed. It was no big deal,” I say, glancing up from the wok.

“How much do I owe you?” Her voice is clipped, like she’s talking through clenched teeth. Maybe she is.

“It’s no big deal,” I say again.

“You know,” my brother says, “my cab could really use a tune-up. And some new shocks? Hook me up? ”

“I’ve had my eye on a vintage Armani suit over at Avalon,” Charles says. They laugh.

“Don’t embarrass her, boys—it was a sweet, kind thing to do,” Aurora says.

From the look in her eyes, if Meryl had a gun right now, I’d be bleeding.

“Just tell me how much it is,” she says. “I’ll write you a check.”

“Hey, smells like dinner’s burning,” Robert says. “Better stir it.”

“Thanks,” I say, pushing food around with the wooden spoon. He nods and smiles—the first time he’s ever smiled at me.

Too bad it wasn’t him I was trying to impress.

I finish up the stir-fry and everyone serves themselves. When we’re all seated around the kitchen table, Robert says, “Aurora and I, uh, we have an announcement.”

Oh, now I know why he was smiling.

“Do I have a dress to design?” Charles asks.

Aurora says, “That won’t be necessary, although I might ask for your help with some alterations.”

She and Robert clasp each other’s hands.

“You’re going to do it soon?” Meryl asks. “Even with the show coming up and everything? ”

“Well,” says Aurora, “it’s going to be a little challenging, but there are some circumstances that are, shall we say, adjusting the timeline rather dramatically—which is why we wanted to tell you all as soon as possible.”

Charles chuckles. “What, is it la migra? ” He takes a bite of the stir-fry.

Robert clears his throat. “Actually, yes. Not all of you know that I’m from Vancouver, and I’m here on a work visa.
